CBD for your Dog? Yes…
What You Need to Know About CBD Oil for Your Dogs
As you’ve probably already had many conversations with fellow dog owners about the latest and greatest wellness trends, it’s likely that you will have heard of cannabidiol (CBD) oil for dogs.
We’ve answered some of the most common questions for you, so you can learn more about this evolving pet-wellness trend.
What is CBD Oil?
Cannabidiol – or CBD for short – is a chemical compound found in certain strains of the cannabis plant, particularly in the hemp variety.
It is known to have many potential health benefits, with the scientific evidence slowly building to support those claims. The FDA has also just approved its first CBD-based drug for the treatment of patients suffering from rare forms of epilepsy.
Will it Get My Dog High?
No! Although CBD is derived from cannabis, it contains minuscule levels of its cousin chemical compound Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is responsible for the psychoactive nature of marijuana. By taking CBD, your dog will not experience any kind of “buzz” or “high” that you may associate with cannabis, it will only enjoy the associated health benefits.
How Will CBD Help My Dog?
Currently there have been no formal studies on how CBD specifically affects dogs, however users report many of the same health benefits that are associated with humans taking CBD oil after their dogs started using CBD regularly.
As CBD is anti-inflammatory, it can often help older dogs who are suffering from joint pain or mobility issues. Furthermore, CBD has scientifically been proven to have a calming effect on those that suffer with anxiety.
Which is great for when you expect your pets to get anxious, such as socializing with other animals for the first time or for stress-inducing events such as July 4th fireworks.
Lastly, as dogs get older they often develop cancerous tumors as part of the natural process of aging. There has been limited scientific investigation carried out into CBD and cancer, yet initial studies have shown that it can help to shrink tumors. Better still, it can help with the associated side effects of cancer such as nausea and pain.
Are There Any Risks Associated Using CBD Oil in Dogs?
The safety and risks of using CBD for dogs have not yet been researched. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is still in process of approving CBD and therefore has not issued a dosing chart. Therefore, it’s hard to comment on any specific risks.
However, it’s always advisable when giving your dog something new such as CBD, to start out with small amounts and then closely monitor the effects. And always check with your veterinarian first before introducing your dog to new products.
